Marcia’s Health Challenge Update #1

I know this is kind of cliche’, but WOW! December flew by! So, we’re 31 days into our Treadmill Challenge, Gene Lempp and I, and it’s been a rough month for finding time to take care of myself.  Here’s how it all panned out:

The first 10 days: I was on track with my walking. I had cut out high fats and most sugar. Lost 2 lbs.

On the 11th day:  I found out that we would be moving my mother into assisted living on the 19th. We had one week to pack her apartment. My husband and I traveled to help several days that week, while my sisters and brothers-in-law did the bulk of it since they live in the same town.

Week of 12/12:That week I felt as though I had tougher workouts than the treadmill…bending, lifting, being on my feet for hours at a time. Every morning that I woke, I felt re-energized which said to me that circulation was improved. My eating was good, too.

Moving day: We were at Mom’s new place from 10 am til early evening – moving boxes, unpacking and organizing. The only access to food that I had was a box of cookies my sister brought and the McDonald’s burgers and fries my husband brought in for us.  :(

12/20 – 12/25: Baked cookies like crazy to be ready for the holiday, but didn’t eat them! Walked 3 days. Other eating was on target, until Christmas Eve when I had salty ham, cheesy potatoes and cheesy broccoli. It was all topped off with and amazing chocolate bread pudding! Christmas Day was healthier. My stepdaughter made pasta caprese with delicious turkey meatballs (baked-not fried),  salad and cheesecake for dessert. I cut teeny slices of cheesecake for everyone. Maintained my 2 lb weight loss.

12/26 – 12/30: We brought our eldest granddaughter home with us during Christmas break. Walked once this week. Spent most of my time playing with Alexa, took her to a movie, etc. 1 lb.weight loss – even with eating Christmas candy and cookies!

Results:

  • Total of 3 lbs lost for the month. Had hoped to lose 5 lbs.
  • Walked 30 minutes on 11 days on the treadmill. Gene and I had agreed to also count one day when I was packing my mom’s things and he was running around with his girls. We felt we had done the equivalent of walking for 30 minutes. So, a total of 12 days of exercise – had planned on 16 days for December.

How do I feel about these results?

I’m somewhat disappointed, since I should have  walked more this past week. However, I didn’t fail. I worked at eating better and did lose a few pounds. I worked at exercising and do feel more energetic and more flexible.

I know January will be better since I won’t have so many obligations that take me away from the treadmill.

For January, I plan to walk 20 days to meet my 32 days goal. I also plan to have snacks that consist of fruits, whole grain crackers, nuts, etc. Sugars in my diet will be severely reduced so I can meet my 10 lb weight loss goal for the 6o-day period.

Wish me luck! I’ll be checking again on January 29th.

Would you like to join me in the Sugar- Reduction plan for January? Let me know in the comments and we can support each other over the coming month.

Marcia, it sounds like you did keep yourself really busy. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re just starting out. As Gene told me once, as long as you’re moving forward, it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. You’re going at the pace that was right for you at the time. Hopefully you’ll have less stress this month and can really boot camp it out if you want to. Just be safe and happy and get yourself one heck of a workout mix to keep ya goin. Let me know if you want me to mail you a cd. I warn you, I listen to lots of J. Lo. “Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got…I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the Block.” :D

You crack me up Jess! I’m not as cool as you in that way…I read while i walk. Never have been one to listen to music during a workout like the cool kids. I listent o music while i’m cleaning…it’s the only way i get it done.
Funny you mention J Lo. My daughter, Jennifer, was nick-named “Jenny from the block” for years!
My treadmill will be dragging it’s sorry @$$ by the end of the month from the workout I’m going to give it! Thanks for the encouragement!

Holidays are the toughest time to loose or even maintain weight but despite all the responsibilities that you carried on your shoulders you managed to drop a few pounds! Woo hoo, Marcia! Keep up the exercise and a healthy diet in 2012 – I will cheer for you :-)

I’m sorry you feel disappointed, because I’m rather impressed! What a month to be trying to stick to any schedule, let alone an exercise and healthy eating regime. Yikes! Throw a move into the mix, and I think you’ve done incredibly well. Good luck with the coming months, and may 2012 be the Year of Good Health for you.

Thanks so much, Naomi! I guess I was a little disappointed because several years ago I began in December also and did amazingly well. Just wanted a repeat of that I guess. But I’m not down about it, I know I some good progress. I wish you the same for 2012 and beyond!

Congrats on your 3 lb. loss. That’s terrific. I’d love to join you for the sugar-reduction diet this month, although my greater issue is crackers and cheese! Good luck on your treadmill goals for January; I know you can do it!! :

I wouldn’t be too disappointed. You’re still 3 pounds lighter than when you started and you’ve started a healthier lifestyle. Congrats on that success.
I usually eat pretty healthy, but like most of us, that went out the window during the holidays. I’ve stopped buying processed foods and try to get most of my groceries at Sprouts or Trader Joes. That makes avoiding the bad stuff a whole lot easier. My biggest challenge is getting back into working out. I’m doing it, but I don’t like it!

Good for you, Diana! Don’t worry, you’ll like it when you see results!
I’d love a whole foods or good health food store in my area. I was in TRader joe’s once when I lived in Vegas and shopped there as often as I could afford, but never heard of Sprouts. Keep up the great work and thanks for the supportive comments. Happy New Year, my friend!

Congrats on losing during the hardest month of the year. You baked cookies without eating them — don’t you think you should get a free 5 lbs off just for saying no to that? LOL.

    Good luck with January too!

Marcia – did you know you also don’t have to count the calories in an ugly cookie. Yep. It’s true. :)

I need to get back into walking, the dog and I sorely miss it, and I’ve added it to my ROW80 goals. Good luck with the sugar reduction Marcia.

My vow is to get back to where I was 4 years ago and cut out the sugar, the junk, eat more fiber and get to that gym I’m paying for! Let us all inspire each other. Good work Marcia on your challenge. Keep up the challenge. It’s nice to have something hanging over your shoulder to keep you motivated. Happy New Year.

It’s a good thing PF is cheap! I’d have been doing the same as you, all this time–paying and not going much.
Challenge’s do help me–keeps the goal ever-present and i feel like a cheater if I don’t do what I said I’d do. And who doesn’t hate saying we missed the target by a mile?
You were doing so well for a long time! Remember the teeny size jeans you fit into? It would be fantastic if you could get back in that realm again. You’d feel so much better. I’ll be thinking about you and will kick your butt if you need it!
